Six new things to know about Adelaide this week – 26 July 2022

An acquisition at Magill Estate Kitchen
Housewarming Series is a new monthly event at the Magill Estate Kitchen (MEK) that will feature 12 guest chefs from across the country over the next 12 months. It kicks off this Thursday, July 28 with Jake Nicolson of Brisbane’s acclaimed Sichuan and Cantonese-inspired diner Donna Chang joining MEK Executive Chef Scott Huggins on the pass. They serve a five course yum cha style lunch and dinner in front of the beautiful vines of the cellar door of Penfolds Magill Estate. The chefs will bring Moreton Bay beetle dumplings to the table; Queensland crab dumplings; wontons with scallops and prawns; roasted cumin lamb buns; toast with prawns and wild scampi with caviar; and more. From the ashes…
Earlier this month, the Brompton Distillery Door Long Story Short was abandoned by a devastated one Fire that broke out on a neighboring property, which forces the store to close shop for a few months. Over the next month, while the team remodels, they’ll be popping up at Cafe Luna (every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm) and The Stag Public House (every Sunday from 12pm), pouring three new cocktails, including the one with milk washed Electric Heater with Storytellers branded gin and lemon verbena.

A Pakistani tea house in the Central Market
Adelaide Central Market has welcomed a new Producer in Residence, Lahore Tea House, for the next three weeks (until August 6th). The stall, named after the city in Pakistan, offers traditional and Western-inspired Pakistani snacks and street food (think ‘samosa pie’, chaat and gulab jamun) as well as drinks like masala chai, cardamom tea and date and almond tea -shakes; and weekend specials like chicken biryani, omelet paratha wraps, and kafta kebabs with saffron and pistachios. Owner Muhammad Aman Ullah and his family, who recently moved to Australia, are starting this project with the support of the Thrive Refugee Association.

Good Gilbert vs Leigh Street Wine Room
The Good Time Sunday Winter Series at Leigh Street continues next month, with the Good Gilbert team stopping by for a lunchtime takeover on August 21st. It’s going to be a battle of wine bars, with each venue serving different drops from their superlative wine lists and Good Gilbert chef Savannah Sexton pops in to cook alongside Peter Orr of Leigh Street. Seats for the two sessions are strictly limited, so hurry up. Tickets are $80 and Available online.

Winner Winner Fried Chicken Dinner
Adelaide is riding a very tasty fried chicken wave. The newest contender: Extra Fried Chicken, a crunchy new spin-off of Peel Street fried chicken shop Extra Chicken Salt that’s only available for takeout (and on Uber Eats) or for dinner on weekend nights. The menu includes a variety of burgers, along with fries, mashed and gravy, and fried chicken pieces. The ’70s-themed diner opened in late 2020 under owners Peter De Marco (Valentino’s, Chicco Palms, Chicken & Pig) and his longtime business partner Phillip Tropeano to celebrate the old-school chook shop of rotisserie chicken and rotisserie everyone Side dishes (think roasted carrots, peas, gravy boat and mashed potatoes).

A new food and farming festival in the Flinders Ranges
Fancy a road trip? The inaugural Quandong Festival – curated by Rebecca Sullivan of local food label Warndu – begins next month in Quorn in the Flinders Ranges (Nukunu Country), bringing together some of the country’s most empowering educators, growers, chefs, authors and more to celebrate sustainable living , agriculture and bush food. There will be performances by ABC’s Costa Georgiadis Gardening Australia, river hut‘s Paul West, Rodney Dunn of The Agrarian Kitchen and acclaimed author Bruce Pascoe, plus workshops, cooking demonstrations, panel discussions, dinners, music and more.
