When I first heard the term “coastal grandmother” I had no idea what it was – but I knew right away that it sounded like a trend I could get behind.
The expression evokes lounging days on a chaise longue, fresh linen outfits and homes with spacious farmhouse kitchens. And basically that’s it. TikTok user @Lexnicoletawho is credited with coining the term, said in a video that those who love coastal vibes, recipes and cooking, cozy interiors and more might fit the “coastal grandmother” aesthetic. And no, you don’t have to be a real grandmother to be a Coaster, “it’s for everyone,” she said.
For those not lucky enough to live in a beach house with a large yard, you can still capture the spirit of the aesthetic simply by dressing for the role. “I would describe it as very neutral, classic staples in light tones… it’s very crisp, very clean,” said the New York City-based personal stylist Samantha Brown. “It’s kind of a nod to that ageless, wealthy — but not flashy — seaside granny.”
Brown said that while the “coastal grandmother” aesthetic may appeal to a slightly older generation, it’s also great for those who’ve settled into the cozy and uncomplicated outfits that have made up the majority of our closets for the past several years. but still want to look composed. “It’s a step up from wearing leggings and a sweater, but it’s still very, very basic,” Brown said. “It’s almost like a capsule wardrobe feel, like really nice basics in neutral colors that are easy to mix and match.”
According to personal stylist Christine StoneTo keep up with the trend, you want to stick with earthy tones like blue, green, cream, white, beige, and light pink. Must-have pieces include long-sleeved cotton shirts, sweaters, cargo pants and hats. Brown added that things like white button-downs, jeans (but not the skinny versions), slacks, and quality tees are other staples.
Here, the stylists have shared some of the ways to wear the trend, and we’ve included a few of our favorite options too.
Coastal Grandmother’s staple
Button-downs are a staple of the trend, and this popular option from Amazon comes in a few colors to match the aesthetic, but you can’t go wrong with the white hue. According to the brand, it’s made from a soft, durable material that gives an instant lived-in feel.
Light, breezy basics make up the majority of a coastal grandmother’s wardrobe, so these linen trousers seem like a great option. “They’re perfectly dressed up for lounging or shopping or brunch,” said one reviewer.
Whether you’re going to a garden party or hosting a backyard wine night, this dress is a perfect choice. According to the brand, it hits just above the knee and is neither too loose nor too tight, making it a great “everyday” dress. As an added bonus, it’s currently heavily discounted – just don’t forget to use the code SHOP SPRING at checkout to save!
Old Navy women’s high-waisted straight-leg jeans in a light wash
These Old Navy jeans have more than 600 five-star reviews from buyers who say they’re soft and comfortable. “Perfect fit, perfect length, perfect weight, perfect shade, perfect stretch!” wrote one reviewer.
If you spend a lot of time on the coast (or at least want to look like one), you need a hat. Perfect for gardening or lounging by the pool, this hat offers UPF 50+ protection and is foldable so it fits easily in your bag.
Stein recommended this bucket hat from Amazon. Since the style is having a moment, you’ll be ticking off multiple trends at once!
Everlane The box-cut t-shirt made from organic cotton
Stein likes this cotton tee and we love how it feels like a classic and easy to style piece that anyone could benefit from having in their closet. The white hue is a must, but the Clay and Iced Coffee options also seem to fit the vibe.
Naadam The essential cashmere sweater
Imagine this: you’re lying in your beach house with a book, sipping tea and wearing an ultra-cozy cashmere sweater. Sounds picturesque, right? While most of us don’t have access to a beach house, you’ll fulfill that fantasy halfway with Naadam’s Cashmere Sweater, which Stein recommends for the trend. At $75, the best-seller is cheaper than other options on the market, but it doesn’t sacrifice quality — according to the brand, it’s “soft like heaven.”
Eileen Fisher Fine jersey tank top with high neck
Brown said that Eileen Fisher is a place where you can find luxe basics with a “coastal grandmother” style. And we love how chic and simple this sleeveless turtleneck shirt is.
Theory Leenda scoop neck sweater in royal wool
According to Brown, Theory is another brand that makes staples that fit the trend. This crew neck jumper from the company caught our eye immediately. The wool material wicks moisture and regulates temperature, and the short sleeves make it perfect for the season.
Oliver Logan Aberdeen Wide Leg Crop
Stein also recommended these pants by Oliver Logan. The brand is made from sustainable materials and says they have a comfortable level of stretch and a high-waisted fit that hugs your bum and thighs before flared at the knee.
