Great architects know that light is a powerful force in design. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe said, “Visual truth lies in the structure of light.” Steven Holl believed that “a building speaks through the stillness of perception orchestrated by light”. And Le Corbusier left us with the majestic phrase: “Architecture is the learned play, correct and magnificent, of forms composed in light.”
Architect Lawrence Scarpa sees things through the lens of design and the needs of the end users of the spaces he creates. “When you can bring poetry and beauty into the problem-solving process of design, it makes it all the better,” says the director of Los Angeles architecture firm Brooks + Scarpa. The work of the office that Scarpa founded with Managing Director Angela Brooks is proof that light is an essential partner of architecture. Her projects, which include affordable housing, museums, government buildings, residences and institutional buildings, celebrate the interplay of light and volume, texture and contrast, and accessibility and narrative.
On September 22nd Scarpa will present the keynote for the second day of LightSPEC West in Los Angeles. His talk “Discovery through Design: A Journey into Light” will share how his company explores design to connect people, places and experiences, and explores the processes behind the actual creation of our physical environment. He will discuss how client involvement in the design process leads to more meaningful and thoughtful buildings and share design projects that successfully integrate beauty, joy, health and wellness with best practices in sustainability and innovation. And he will talk about how ultimately all design disciplines can work together more effectively, from project inception through operations and maintenance to renovation and recycling.
Scarpa and Brooks are co-recipients of the 2022 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the AIA’s highest annual award. Her multidisciplinary practice includes architecture, landscape architecture, planning, environmental design, materials research, and graphic, furniture, and interior design services. Seamlessly blending architecture, arts and crafts, her work has garnered international recognition for the creative use of materials and challenges conventional approaches to fully enhance the human experience. The company was also recognized for pioneering more holistic approaches to providing environmentally conscious design. By re-imagining the design and construction processes – involving material, form, construction, light and even finance – Brooks + Scarpa highlight latent potentials in their projects to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
